Wheel Balancing Cost UK 2026.
What you should pay.
The UK pays £5 to £15 per wheel for standard balancing, or £20 to £60 for all four. Below: side-by-side prices from every major chain, plus honest guidance on when balancing is genuinely needed.

The four service types and what they cost
Most cars need standard dynamic balancing. Road force is a paid upgrade for difficult vibrations or low-profile tyres.
| Service | Per wheel | All four | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard dynamic balance | £5 - £15 | £20 - £60 | Spin balance on machine, both planes corrected |
| Road force balance | £15 - £30 | £60 - £120 | Hunter GSP, simulates load, premium service |
| With new tyre purchase | Free | Free | Included with fitting at most chains |
| Mobile wheel balancing | £10 - £20 | £40 - £80 | On-site service, call-out fees may apply |

When you actually need wheel balancing
Three scenarios genuinely call for it. Outside those, you may be paying for a service you do not need.
- 01
Vibration at motorway speed
A steering-wheel shimmy that builds between 50 and 70 mph and gets worse with speed is the classic unbalanced front wheel. Vibration through the seat at the same speeds points to a rear wheel.
- 02
When you fit new tyres
Tyres are never perfectly uniform. A balance is part of the fitting process at every reputable UK chain and is included in the headline tyre price.
- 03
After kerbing or a heavy pothole
UK pothole impacts can throw a previously balanced wheel out, and may also bend the rim. A rebalance plus visual rim check is sensible if a hit was hard enough to feel through the steering.
Caution: If your car pulls left or right, that is alignment, not balancing. See balancing vs alignment.
Where the weights go
Inner plane (clip-on) and outer plane (stick-on), both corrected on a dynamic balance.
What pushes the price up
Four variables drive your final cost.
SUV, 4x4 and van wheels need more weight and longer cycles.
Road force balancing roughly doubles standard pricing.
London and the South East run higher than the Midlands and North.
Dealerships charge most. Independents typically the cheapest.
Balancing vs alignment, the short version
Both fix wheel-related driving problems but they are not the same job. Confusing them is the most common reason UK motorists pay for the wrong service.
Mass distribution
Small weights added to the rim so the wheel-and-tyre assembly spins true. Fixes vibration.
- Cost: £5 - £15 per wheel
- Time: 10 - 20 minutes for four
- Frequency: Every tyre change or 5k - 8k miles
Suspension geometry
Camber, caster and toe angles set so the wheels point exactly where they should. Fixes pulling and edge wear.
- Cost: £40 - £150
- Time: 30 - 60 minutes
- Frequency: Annually or after pothole / suspension work
Frequently asked
How much does wheel balancing cost in the UK?+
Standard dynamic balancing is 5 to 15 pounds per wheel at most UK garages, or 20 to 60 pounds for all four. Halfords charges 7.99 per wheel, Tyre Shopper 6.50, ATS Euromaster 10.50. Independents are typically 5 to 12 pounds per wheel and are usually the cheapest option for standalone balancing.
Is wheel balancing the same as wheel alignment?+
No. Balancing corrects weight distribution on the wheel using small lead or zinc weights. Alignment adjusts suspension geometry: camber, caster and toe angles. Different services, different costs. Balancing is 5 to 15 pounds per wheel, alignment is 40 to 150 pounds.
Is wheel balancing included with new tyres?+
Yes at most major UK chains. Halfords, Kwik Fit, National, BlackCircles and Tyre Shopper all include standard dynamic balancing in the fitting price. Road force balancing is normally a paid upgrade. Part-worn tyres are usually not balanced at purchase, budget 5 to 10 pounds per wheel on top.
How often should wheels be balanced?+
Every 5,000 to 8,000 miles, or with every tyre rotation. Also after any pothole or kerb impact, and immediately if vibration appears at speed. UK roads tend to need more frequent rebalancing than the manufacturer minimum because of pothole damage.
Is wheel balancing checked at MOT?+
No. Balancing is not an MOT test item. However, the cupped or scalloped tyre wear that prolonged imbalance causes can reduce tread depth below the 1.6 mm legal minimum, which is an MOT failure.
Can I balance wheels at home?+
A static bubble balancer (20 to 40 pounds from Halfords or Amazon) can correct simple static imbalance, but it cannot do the dynamic two-plane balance that motorway speeds require. For a daily driver, paying 5 to 15 pounds per wheel at a garage is faster, more accurate and almost always worth it.
